Mykonos or Naxos: Picking Your Perfect Greek Island

Posted on January 23, 2024February 1, 2024

There’s something undeniably enchanting about the Greek islands. Surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea, each island has a unique charm, but today we’ll focus on two favorites: Mykonos and Naxos. If you’re having trouble picking your perfect Greek island, sit back and read on, as we take a deep dive into the wonders of these two beautiful destinations.

Mykonos: The Glamorous Gem of the Aegean

Mykonos is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, luxury resorts, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. It’s a favorite among celebrities and jet-setters, known for its stunning beaches, chic restaurants, and designer boutiques.

The Chora of Mykonos, its main town, is a labyrinth of cobblestone streets filled with white-washed buildings, blue doors, and iconic windmills. It’s a picturesque setting that’s highly ‘Instagrammable’, making it a major draw for millennials.

Beaches are Mykonos’ major attraction. From the trendy Psarou and Paradise to the family-friendly Ornos and Platis Gialos, these sandy stretches are perfect for sunbathing, water sports, or simply watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

Nightlife in Mykonos is legendary. From beach clubs to nightclubs, there’s a party for everyone. The most famous spot is undoubtedly the Super Paradise Beach Club, known for its wild parties and world-class DJs.

However, Mykonos isn’t all about the glitz and glamour. It also offers historical attractions like the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and the sacred island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Naxos: The Laid-Back Island with a Rich History

Naxos, on the other hand, is more laid-back and traditional. It’s the largest island in the Cyclades and boasts a rich history, fertile landscapes, and long sandy beaches.

Naxos Town, or Chora, is a lively port town with a stunning Venetian Castle at its center. Exploring its winding streets reveals charming boutiques, cozy tavernas, and hidden squares.

The island is dotted with ancient sites. The most famous is the Portara, the remains of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo. Other historical gems include the ancient site of Iria, the tower of Belonia, and the Byzantine churches scattered around the island.

Beaches in Naxos are some of the best in the Cyclades. Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, and Plaka are popular for their clear waters and golden sand. For more secluded options, try Aliko or Pyrgaki.

Gastronomy in Naxos is a highlight. Thanks to its fertile lands, the island is known for its cheese, potatoes, and Kitron, a local citrus liqueur. Don’t miss the chance to sample these at the local tavernas!

Mykonos or Naxos? The Verdict

Choosing between Mykonos and Naxos depends on your preferences.

  • If you’re after a lively, glamorous destination with a vibrant nightlife, designer boutiques, and luxury resorts, then Mykonos is the island for you.
  • If you prefer a more relaxed, authentic Greek island experience, with a rich history, stunning landscapes, and delectable local cuisine, then Naxos should be your pick.

Whichever island you choose, rest assured that both Mykonos and Naxos offer unforgettable experiences and will give you a taste of the beauty and charm of the Greek islands. Now, all that’s left is to pack your suitcase and prepare for the trip of a lifetime!
